JF: Your recent book Autoportraits (Fata Morgana, 2010) doesn’t offer the straightforward self-portraiture one might expect, but sketches of writers and artists you have known personally (Paul Valéry being a revered exception). Could you comment on this?

JR: It seems to me that our way of describing and interpreting someone, however objective it may claim or appear to be, reveals things about ourselves no less than about the other, since our mode of being is the chief instrument we use in such an exercise. People in life, in books. And I suppose I approach ‘reality’ in life and on the page in much the same way. Actually I have rather a penchant (a weakness?) for anthropomorphism. I find myself personifying things at the risk of making them less real.
